Originating from Southeast Asia, the grapefruit tree is believed to have been introduced to China around 100 BC. This large tree which grows to 8-12m in height has an elegant foliage and is also used as an ornamental species. The shiny, evergreen leaves are fragrant, as are its massive flowers. Its round or pear-shaped fruit is the largest of the citrus fruits. Beneath the yellow skin is a very thick zest and almost crunchy, slightly juicy segments which are very popular in Asia. A decoction of the leaves soothes ulcers. The juice has fever-reducing benefits, while the seeds are used to treat chills and lumbago.
